Marshall County Schools Employee Survey
|
|
Paul Trader and Cindy Ward, candidates for Marshall County Board of Education, have sent a survey to all county school employees who are registered to vote in Marshall County. Responses are due back before Friday, Feb. 29th, 2008.
Results of the survey have been posted below.
How did we find the list of employees and their addresses? We took the list of school employees available on the WV State BOE website, and cross-referenced it with a list of all registered voters in Marshall County. After throwing out a few names that work in the county office (like the superintendent), we were left with 531 names. All were sent the survey along with a self-addressed stamped envelope.
Due to the sometimes controversial responses to the last 2 questions on the survey, these responses will not be listed verbatim. However, in some cases, these responses may be paraphrased to illustrate the tenor of those employees who chose to participate in the survey. The questions were:
What do you think can be done to improve your relationship with administration and/or the Board of Education?
If you could change one thing in the county school system, what would it be?
Some interesting observations about the results:
The respondents were asked to circle their job description. Notice the large number of those who didn't do this (20). Either they were afraid to for fear of retaliation, or they can't follow directions. In either case, it's bad.
By far, wasteful spending received the worst score. Most all of the respondents felt that wasteful spending is a problem, and some felt very strongly so.
COG heard rumours that some employees were afraid to respond, believing the whole thing was a ruse cooked up by Superintendent Renzella to rout out "problem employees." While this is entirely false, the fact that these employees are so scared has prompted Paul Trader to declare that, if elected, he will work to provide a mechanism for employees to speak directly with the board members without fearing retaliation.
Responses to the last 2 questions ranged from very thoughtful and pertinent to completely outrageous. One respondent took the time to type a 4-page, single spaced letter addressing each survey statement with a very well thought-out response. The others ranged from "Jesus is Lord" to "get rid of the Mafia and their minions." Very eye-opening.

Overall Responses - Those surveyed were asked to rate their statements on a scale of 1 to 5, where 1 = strongly disagree, 2 = moderately disagree, 3 = undecided / neutral, 4 = moderately agree, 5 = strongly agree. The results shown below are an overall average of those responses. Anything less than 3 would indicate more respondents disagreed with the statement. Anything over 3 would indicate more respondents agreed with the statement.
